Treatment for Painful Sports Injuries

Sports Injuries include a number of acutely painful problems affecting the soft tissues, for example acute sprains, torn ligaments, sore muscles and dislocations.

Most Sports Injuries are amenable to conservative management, including Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation (RICE).

Some may require a short-term course of analgesics (pain killers), accompanied by a programme of functional restoration with physiotherapy and physical therapy.

We work in conjunction with our Physiotherapy colleagues, who have a wealth of experience in assessment, treatment and rehabilitation of sport and recreational injuries.

A number of the Physiotherapists have experience working with a variety of National and International Sporting Organisations, including Football and Rugby Teams.

Sometimes it may be useful to perform local injections, for example injections of local anaesthetic and anti-inflammatory in Tennis Elbow.

Occasionally Sports Injuries can become chronic painful conditions, for example persistent knee pain in runners; persistent lower back pain in dancers. Read the article A Dancer’s Guide to Pain Relief for more information.

You can find useful links to further information on all aspects of pain treatment in links and resources and via the list of conditions we treat.
